Adelaide students will have the opportunity to study with the world’s most valuable football club Real Madrid as a result of a new international partnership with Torrens University announced today.

From January next year, students at Torrens University on Wakefield Street will have access to a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Sports Management during which students will spend two weeks on a placement with the Real Madrid Football Club in Spain.

The $2.5 billion club has been ranked number one on Forbes Magazine’s ‘world’s most valuable sporting clubs’ for the past three years.

“Increasingly, the (sporting) industry requires qualified professionals to drive the business side of its performance, which is why this new joint program aims to create leaders who will add value across all sporting codes,” said Torrens University Australia Vice Chancellor Professor Justin Beilby.

“Our MBA students will benefit from the combined strength and innovative approach of both institutions, learning from global industry leaders and gaining hands-on experience at Real Madrid Football Club.”

Chief executive of the Real Madrid Graduate School, Emilio Butragueño – also the director of institutional relations with Real Madrid Football Club- said the international sporting industry now needs “professionals with sports-focused expertise in business, management, finance and communications, and the launch of this joint MBA program will help fulfil that need”.

Teaching staff for the course will include the leader of operations for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Thomas Fricke and a US operations expert working with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, Stege Gera.

The partnership between Torrens University and Real Madrid Graduate School is one of three new collaborations announced this morning at a ceremony in Adelaide.

Torrens University is also partnering with the Chifley Business School and the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School to deliver a raft of new industry-aligned courses.
