A premium shiraz from Barossa-based Wolf Blass winery has been named Winestate 2013 Wine of the Year for Australia and New Zealand after a tasting program featuring 11,000 wines.

The Wolf Blass 2010 Medlands Vineyard Platinum Label Shiraz was announced overall winner at a ceremony today at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Winestate magazine publisher Peter Simic said it was selected after the “toughest peer reviewed blind judging in Australia or NZ”, in which less than 5 per cent of the wines entered reached finalist stage.

The two other top awards announced by Winestate also went to South Australian wineries.

The Australian Wine Company of the Year award, based on consistent performance throughout the blind tastings, went to Barossa winery Peter Lehmann.  The honour comes in the same year that the company’s founder, Peter Lehmann, died at the age of 82.

Eric Semmler, of Riverland winery 919, was named Winemaker of the Year.

“He continually delivered amazing wines, both table and fortified, showcasing how amazing the wines can be from the Riverland,” said Winestate wine marketing director Peter Jackson.
