Curator announced for 2024 Adelaide Biennial
Sydney-based curator and arts manager JosĂ© Da Silva, announced as curator of the 2024 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, says he is eager to develop âsomething extraordinaryâ that allows people to see culture and society differently.
The Art Gallery of South Australia announced Da Silvaâs appointment followed a national callout and said he will bring more than 20 years of curatorial experience to the role.
He is currently director of UNSW Galleries (the University of New South Walesâ contemporary art, media and design museum) and was previously head of the Australian CinĂ©mathĂšque at the Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).
âIâm thrilled for this opportunity to share my vision for the Adelaide Biennial and feel energised by all the possibilities ahead, especially the opportunity to learn from elders, artists, thinkers, and community figures across Australia,â Da Silva said in a statement.

The Adelaide Biennial has been presented by the Art Gallery of South Australia as part of the Adelaide Festival program since 1990. The 2022 Biennial, titled Free/State and curated by Sebastian Goldspink, featured work by 25 contemporary Australian artists and closed at the start of June.
The 2024 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art will be presented from March 1 to June 2, 2024.
AGSA director Rhana Devenport welcomed Da Silva to the role of curator, saying his âwealth of experience and nuanced curatorial practice promises to deliver a captivating exhibitionâ.
