Opportunities for regional artists

Applications are now open for Country Arts SA’s 2021 Nebula program, which is held during SALA and offers a professional development opportunity for early to mid-career visual artists from regional South Australia.

Up to eight artists will be selected to travel to Adelaide during SALA for three days of activities such as workshops, gallery visits, curator talks, forums and networking. The aim of the program is to extend participants’ creative arts practices and build skills and knowledge that will help them progress their career.

Expressions of interest (here) close on Monday, June 21.

Collaborative project for queer artists

ACE Open has issued a call-out for emerging queer-identifying artists to be part of a collaborative project stemming from an exhibition at the gallery by interdisciplinary artist Sidney McMahon.

The project, called Togetherness, promises to be “a weekend of collectivity, intimacy, affinities and collaboration from 18 – 20 June”.

ACE Open says the idea has emerged from McMahon’s Of Sorrow and Release, a sculpture, sound and video exhibition on now at ACE Open that explores loss, change and revelation.

Co-facilitated by McMahon and Frances Barrett, the selected group of six artists will develop a collaborative “video document”, to be screened on the last night of the exhibition in July, share meals and make connections.

SA Film Corp and Stan launch fund for new local scripts

The South Australian Film Corporation has joined with streaming service Stan to launch a matched development fund designed to encourage the creation of original South Australian scripted series.

The partners say the aim is to generate “premium scripted series” for airing on the Stan platform.

The pitch is for “bold, distinctive ideas with complex characters set in unusual worlds or situations that merit high production values, resulting in scripted series of world-class scope and scale”.

“The projects must be highly original, strongly serialised, returnable, and intended for production and post-production in South Australia.”

The fund is open for applications now with the first round taking selected projects from concept to “pitch-ready” stage.

After pitching to Stan, two projects will be selected for further development and, potentially, commissioning by the streaming service.

SAFC CEO  Kate Croser said the “exciting initiative opens up new opportunities for South Australian producers and writers to create even more bold, innovative and unique series for audiences across Australia”.

“The SAFC is delighted to continue our successful partnership with Stan which has already seen great production outcomes in series such as Wolf Creek series one and two, and The Tourist currently underway, as well as Stan Original films A Sunburnt Christmas and Gold”.

Calling all choirs

The Adelaide Choral Network is getting ready to celebrate its “Year of the Choir” next year and is inviting interested choirs to join in a planning day at the end of the month.

The year of the choir, a joint initiative with the City of Adelaide, will be a celebration of choir singing and the local choral community, with the network hoping to fill the year with major events, pop-ups, workshops, festivals and performances by choirs of all types.

The network is holding a “sharing day” with the council to begin to discuss the year’s activities.

Choir representatives – up to two per choir – are invited to register to take part. It will be held from 9.30 to 5pm on Saturday, May 29, at the North Adelaide Community Centre, 176 Tynte St.
